It's not enough that a technology works well for it to get widespread use. People have to know about it and be convinced. The "technology marketing" portion of the Technology Marketing & Communications Team of OTA is a customer-driven, multi-disciplined effort that champions a strategic and coordinated marketing approach to technology transfer for FHWA, facilitating the most timely adoption possible of technology that meets the needs of the transportation community and all FHWA customers.

Paramount to good marketing practices for any new technology is knowing the answers to these questions:

  • Who are your primary customers?
  • Who are other members of your target audiences?
  • What are the most cost-effective marketing strategies for reaching your target audiences?
  • What are the implementation barriers, and opportunities, that must be addressed? ... and
  • How can you best leverage your resources to get the appropriate partnerships and resources you need to succeed?

Once you have a handle on the answers to these questions you can confidently move ahead, focusing your precious resources most effectively. In the transportation industry, now more than ever, there's no time to waste "spinning your wheels".
