Demonstration Project 39 showed that asphalt recycling is a
viable rehabilitation technique. A follow-up Application Project 76 documented the state
of the practice and usage of hot-mix asphalt recycling, technical and institutional
barriers restraining its use, and recommendations for enhancing the use of recycled HMA.
Based on the positive results of both these efforts, marketing activities to promote
asphalt recycling have been underway, including the development of an asphalt recycling
workshop to be presented with host State and local highway agencies across the United
States in calendar year 1998. The overall objective of this workshop is to provide current technical information and guidelines on the various methods of hot and cold recycling of asphalt pavement. The target audience is Federal, State and local government and contractor engineers and technicians, who design, construct and maintain asphalt pavements. Additionally, the workshop can be useful to management personnel that are involved in the selection of pavement rehabilitation methods. Specific objectives of this 2-day training course is to provide participants with: (1) An understanding of the various methods (hot and cold) of recycling asphalt pavements, (2) The ability to determine when asphalt recycling is a pavement rehabilitation alternative, (3) The knowledge of how to select the most appropriate asphalt recycling method, (4) Information on materials and mix design for recycling, and (5) Information on equipment, construction methods, and QC/QA practices involved in recycling. The Technology Marketing & Communication Team (TMC) of OTA and the Office of Engineering, working together with the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), the workshop contractor, is nearing completion of the training workshop materials. Several workshop sessions have been scheduled for late winter and spring, 1998. The first workshop session is scheduled for late February, 1998. These sessions will be provided by FHWA at no cost to the hosting agency, with the host providing facility support and equipment for the workshop presentations. Workshop locations and dates are:
