TE-38 Test and Evaluation of Non-Intrusive Vehicle Detector Technologies
Vehicle Detection Technology

Field test and monitor under typical urban conditions, technologies that do not cause disruptions to normal traffic operations, can be safely applied by traffic data collection staffs, and that are cost effective when compared to alternative data collection methods for monitoring traffic volumes and/or vehicle classifications.

Work on Task 1 was completed in March 1995, to review the available non-intrusive technology and to select the hardware for the initial equipment field test. The final report was published in May 1997.

In June 1997 Mn/DOT circulated a questionnaire to over 400 individuals who expressed interest in the results of the NIT research. Over 100 responders have expressed a need for continuing the NIT testing and evaluation and the need to initiate objective testing and evaluation of sensing technologies for real-time speed, occupancy, volume and other performance measures for use in such ITS efforts for traffic management, incident detection and enforcement. Nearly one-half of the responders expressed an interest in serving on a Technical Working Group. The responders represent state DOT's, cities, other countries, technology manufacturers, university research entities and consultants engaged in designing and installing traffic detection technologies. The high level of national and international interest in the continuing the research is because no other organization is evaluating these devices for their ability to meet current and developing data collection needs.

A technical working group had a meeting in the Fall of 1997 to plan a future phase of test and evaluation.
