Urban Drainage Design Manual

Efficient storm drain design requires storm water runoff to be collected through and along highway right-of-ways while minimizing flooding and erosion of adjacent property. Information on storm drainage facilities and drainage design is available from APWA and AASHTO. In addition, several FHWA publications address drainage. However, this information is dated and does not include current research or new approaches to storm drain issues.

A project was initiated to develop a new manual to provide up-to-date, comprehensive and practical guidance for the design of storm drainage systems associated with transportation facilities. Methods and procedures are given for the hydraulic design of storm drainage systems. Design methods for evaluating rainfall and runoff magnitude, pavement drainage, gutter flow, inlet design and other topics are included. The manual, "Urban Drainage Design Manual" has been included in the Hydraulic Engineering Circular series and is designated HEC-22.

The project was completed in 1996. "Urban Drainage Design Manual" has been printed and distributed to all FHWA field offices and state highway agencies. HEC-22 is a resource for NHI Course No. 13027 Urban Drainage Design. It will be distributed to all course participants.
