Research and Instructional Services: Graduate Library Assistant (Reference/Public Service)

About the Program
The UNT Libraries offer full-time graduate students professional experience through their Graduate Library Assistantships and Graduate Research Assistantships. During the fall/spring semesters, these half-time positions provide stipends and benefits. Summer positions are paid hourly with limited benefits eligibility.
Position Description
As a GLA, you will work closely with experienced librarians and paraprofessional staff at the Social Sciences/Humanities and Science and Technology reference desks. You will receive extensive training in public service, dealing with different types of patrons, and working with journal article databases, the UNT Libraries catalog, full text journals, and other print and electronic resources. Additional assignments may be available, depending on your interests and the needs of the department.
We provide a comprehensive training opportunity to prepare you for a professional career in the reference/instruction field.
Position Responsibilities
- Staffs reference desk at Willis Library or Science and Technology Library
- Assists patrons with finding, accessing, evaluating, and utilizing the information they need
- Performs additional duties which may include assisting with
- Instruction sessions
- Outreach events and materials
- Online reference services
- Collection maintenance activities
- Special Projects
Hours and Location
The working schedule is negotiable, but you must be available to work some night and weekend hours. Most work takes place in Willis Library or the Science and Technology Library.
Duration
Fall 2008- Spring 2009. Dependent upon funding, summer employment may also be available.
Minimum Qualifications
You must be a full-time graduate student and have prior relevant experience or complete at least nine graduate credit hours within your discipline with at least one course in research methods, basic information resources management, or information organization and control. You should also possess these qualifications:
- Major in library or information sciences
- Successful completion of course SLIS 5600: Introduction to Information Access and Retrieval
- Strong commitment to public service
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- General experience with computers and various software products
- Willingness to acquire new skills in a rapidly changing environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of electronic databases
- Previous library experience
- Demonstrated interest in the physical or life sciences
- Demonstrated interest in the humanities or social sciences
