How to do Company Research
Follow these steps to research a company:
1. Use Hoovers Online to find the major companies in your industry--click the industry tab and type in your NAICS code.
Sample Search: type in NAICS code 312130. Click Winemakers.
Scroll down to Most Viewed Companies and click Full Company List.
Click on Constellation Brands, Inc.
Click on SEC Filings on the left side bar to locate the Annual Report 10-K for this company.
Click on Item 7 under Part II to obtain the Management Discussion and Analysis--this can be helpful when you want information about the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) facing a company.
Note the mention of the acquisition of the Robert Mondavi Company. As a result of the acquisition, Mondavi does not appear in the list of Hoovers results from the NAICS code search.
2. Search the name of your company in:
Business & Company Resource Center (provides ticker symbol when you do a company search)

3. Use the ticker symbol (for a public company) to obtain stock price history from Thomson One Banker.
Sample Search in Thomson One Banker using the Ticker symbol STZ for Constellation Brands obtained from Business & Company Resource Center:
1. Enter the ticker symbol for Constellation Brands in the search box.
2. Click on Prices tab at top and locate the box called 5 Day Price History.
3. Click on View History.
4. Click on View Chart.
5. Under Time Frame, click the drop down and choose Custom.
6. Click the calendar beside starting period and change it to July 2, 1990.
7. Click the calendar beside ending point and choose the current date.
8. Click Draw.
9. Click View Data.
End of month stock price data is given for the period specified.
Price data goes back to 1974 for companies that were public at that time.
4. How to find a SWOT analysis for a company:
A. Click on Business Source Complete
Click the Advanced Search Tab
Click SWOT Analyses on the right side bar
Search for a SWOT analysis for Constellation:
B. Click on ABI/Inform
Click Advanced Search tab
Click the drop down beside the first search box to change it to Subject. Change the drop down beside the second search box to Company.
Type in SWOT Analysis in the first search box and Constellation in the second search box to find the SWOT analysis for Constellation Brands.
