The UNT Libraries offer full-time graduate students professional experience through their Graduate Library Assistantships and Graduate Research Assistantships. These positions provide stipends and benefits during the fall/spring semester, but summer positions are paid hourly with limited benefits eligibility. Position Description
As a GLA, you will work closely with experienced librarians and paraprofessional staff at the Willis Library and Eagle Commons Reference Desks. You will receive extensive training in public service, dealing with different types of patrons, and working with journal article databases, the UNT Libraries catalog, full text journals, and other print and electronic resources. You will work under the general supervision of the Research and Instructional Services (RIS) Assistant Department Head.

Position Responsibilities
Collection Development
- Assist Subject Librarians with weeding projects.
- Assist Subject Librarians in collecting order requests and maintaining follow-up through delivery to faculty or reference, reserve or circulating collections.
- Notify appropriate faculty and staff of material arrival.
Instruction
- Assist the RIS Librarians in providing library instruction to students in classes and one-on-one. You will conduct instruction face-to-face, by phone, and by e-mail.
- Maintain statistics of instruction sessions.
Outreach
- Design print brochures, tabletop displays for the library, and digital displays for the web site.
- Conduct orientation sessions and library tours for visiting students and classes.
- Work with RIS Librarians to coordinate promotional materials.
Reference
- Respond to reference questions from faculty and students by phone, by e-mail, and in person.
- Maintain statistics of reference activity.
Research
- Provide research assistance to RIS Librarians preparing bibliographic instruction sessions, workshops, training, and presentations.
Web Site Maintenance
- Create and maintain class pages for RIS Librarians.
- Create and maintain subject guides for RIS Librarians.
Hours and Location
The working schedule is negotiable, but you must be available to work some night and weekend hours. Most work takes place in Willis Library or the Eagle Commons Library.
Duration
Fall 2012-Spring 2013. Dependent upon funding, summer employment may also be available.
Minimum Qualifications
You must be a full-time graduate student. You should also possess these qualifications:
- Notice: You must be a master's or doctoral student in the Department of Library and Information Sciences.
- Notice: You must be enrolled for 9 credit hours during the long semesters.
- Prior relevant experience (at least 9 months
working in a library or at least 3 years working in one or more
customer service positions) or completion of at least 9 graduate credit hours within your discipline with at least one course in research methods, basic information resources management, or information organization and control
- Strong commitment to public service
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- General experience with computers and various software products
- Willingness to acquire new skills in a rapidly changing environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of electronic databases
- Previous library experience
- Demonstrated interest in the physical or life sciences
- Demonstrated interest in the humanities or social sciences
