Direct Article Linking
Instructors may now provide direct access to specific articles in many of the UNT Library databases on their WebCT Vista courses, although not all databases support it at this time. Usually an HTML prefix will need to be included that will route the request through the Library’s proxy server so the student can authenticate before accessing the article.
Following is a list of databases which allow direct article linking. They are divided into groups according to how the linking takes place.
Copy and paste the URL: These databases provide the entire URL needed, including the prefix, so all you need to do is to copy and paste:
All Ebsco databases which offer full text. It is called a persistent link. Please see this page for the databases included: http://irservices.library.unt.edu/resource.cfm?ai_id=22
ProQuest Databases, i.e., ABI Inform, Research Library, Ethnic News Watch. It’s called a Document URL and is located at the end of the article.
Add a Prefix: The following databases allow direct article linking, but you will need to add the prefix before the URL. The prefix is: https://libproxy.library.unt.edu/login?url=, and the entire document URL, including the http://, is added after the equals sign. You can highlight the URL in the URL box of your browser, copy it, and paste it after the prefix. The final URL will look like this example: https://libproxy.library.unt.edu/login?url=http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/cinema_journal/v043/43.4chan.html
Databases:
Emerald Fulltext
JSTOR
Library Literature and Info Science Full Text
Literature Resource Center
Project Muse
SpringerLink
Prefix plus Digital Object Identifier (DOI): The other common method of linking to specific articles involves a Digital Object Identifier. The article link will have to include the proxy prefix plus the url for the DOI resolver, and finally the actual DOI for the article. The DOI resolver URL is http://dx.doi.org. It's not the only DOI resolver, but it seems to work with most. Here is an example of how you might locate it in a database:
Shalav, A. "Photovoltaics literature survey (No. 51)." Progress in Photovoltaics: Research and Applications. Volume 15, Issue 1, Pages 87 - 91. DOI: 10.1002/pip.747. DOI Resolver: http://dx.doi.org.
To simplify, the prefix for DOIs becomes this: https://libproxy.library.unt.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/. All you will need to do is append the DOI. The article link you will use in your page would look like this example: https://libproxy.library.unt.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/pip.747
PLEASE NOTE: In some cases the DOI goes to the citation and abstract, and the student will have to look carefully for the link to the full text. It can be anywhere. You may want to take a screen shot and highlight the link for the student.
Databases for which this works include:
Electronic Collections Online
Haworth Press Journals
IEL: (IEEE Explore)
Sage Journals Online
ScienceDirect
SIAM Journals Online
Synergy: Blackwell Humanities and Social Sciences Collection
Taylor & Francis Journals via Informaworld
Wiley Interscience Journals
World Scientific Journals
If you have any questions, or the database you need is not mentioned here, please contact your subject liaison or Frances A. May, fmay@library.unt.edu or 940-565-4812. Databases which do not offer full text are not included.
Please remember if there is an article you need that's not available electronically in full text, it can be placed on electronic reserve. The library would need a paper copy of the article. You can request electronic reserves at the Faculty Reserve Request page.
