Please read installation instructions!

Features

  • Always-available shortcuts to commonly requested library services.
  • Search the library catalog and other defined resources directly from the toolbar or by highlighting text on a page and using the right-click context menu.
  • Support for off-campus access: Since some resources subscribed to by the UNT Libraries require you to be either on campus or logged in, right clicking and selecting "reload..." on a page will attempt to route you through the correct server to access the item.  If you are off campus this will require you to log in.  Afterwards you will be directed to the correct item.
  • Quick full text access:  You can highlight any text on a webpage or in some PDF documents and drag-and-drop it onto the "Scholar" Bookmarklet located on the right side of the toolbar.  The toolbar uses Google Scholar to search for articles and will attempt to automatically direct you to an electronic copy.
  • Support for embedded cues: The toolbar will place a UNT icon in web pages you visit if the toolbar detects an ISBN number.  Clicking on the Icon will search the library for the item. For instance, book pages at Amazon or Barnes & Noble will contain cues that link an ISBN search in the library catalog. Cues are displayed at Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book Review, and other pages.  See note 3.1 below for important information about this feature.
  • Autolinking of ISBN and ISSN numbers to the library catalog

Installation:

  •  Click the link above to install the toolbar
  • If Firefox displays a message "To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site... from installing software on your computer.", press the button labeled "Edit Options..." and click "Allow" add library.unt.edu to the list of websites from which extensions may be installed. Then click "Ok" and visit the "Install" link again.
  • This extension has been tested with Firefox versions 1.0, 1.5.X and 2.0.X on Windows, Linux, and Macintosh OS-X.

Important Notes For Ecampus Users

Please be aware that Vista's browser configuration instructions explicitly instruct you to uninstall or disable browser toolbars.  We have had reports of Firefox locking up when using both simultaneously.  While we have reported this issue, it may be some time before it is addressed.  If you need to use both the toolbar and Vista you may wish to either use alternate browsers or, create a secondary Firefox profile for use with Vista.

Examples and Usage

  1. Embedded Cues: Once installed, visit this Amazon.com page.  Wait for the page to completely load.  Click on the UNT Icon next to the book title to search for the item in the library catalog.  See note 3.1 below for important information about this feature.
  2. Searching Text on a webpage: Highlight the text on the next line, right click and select Search UNT Library Catalog for... Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
  3. Autolinked ISBN/ISSN Numbers: Once installed, the following number should be linked to a search of the library catalog: 006073132X
    1. A Note about autolinking and ISBNs:  Since multiple standard numbers may be associated with a book, it is important to verify that we do not have the item in the library catalog via a secondary number.  When coming from any external services such as Amazon.com or Google, the toolbar will direct you to a framed version of the library catalog, giving you alternative linked numbers upon which to search.  In cases of zero returns you may also wish to perform a title, subject, or keyword search to verify that we do not own the item.
  4. Scholar Support:  Highlight, drag-and-drop the following text onto the "Scholar" bookmarklet on the left side of the toolbar.  A new tab will open.  On campus users will be allowed direct access to the article.  Off campus users will need to log in first.  Right Clicking on the page and selecting "Reload ...." will route you through the correct library server to do so. Analog of Photon-Assisted Tunneling in a Bose-Einstein Condensate
  5. Hiding the toolbar: If you find that the toolbar takes up too much real-estate in your browser, you can temporarily hide it by right-clicking on the main toolbar and uncheck "LibX UNT."
  6. Uninstall: To remove the toolbar from your browser select Tools:Add Ons, select uninstall "LibX University of North Texas" and restart your browser.

IE Toolbar:

There is a beta version for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7.  You may download the installer here.  This version requires that the .NET 2.0 or later also be installed on your computer.  There are several reported bugs associated with this version and it is highly suggested that you use the Firefox version of the toolbar as it is more stable.

Suggestions & Reporting a Problem

The UNT Library will entertain suggestions for additions and other modifications to the toolbar within our abilities.  Periodic updates will automatically be sent to your browser.  Please report problems with the general "report a problem" link at the bottom of every library webpage and we will forward them as appropriate.
