Highways and Roads
- American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials
- This agency sets the design standards for most of our nation's roadways. A Policy on
Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, popularly known as the "Green Book,"
molded the shape of roadways in the United States, because, until 1991, conformance to these
standards was mandatory. More recently, municipalities are authorizing construction
of so-called "skinny streets" and other such features thought to be more
pedestrian and bicycle friendly. The Federal Highway Administration has published,
for example, a work entitled
Flexibility in Highway Design, that complements the
AASHTO Green Book.
- American Road & Transportation Builders Association
- Federation of private firms, public agencies and associations advocating strong federal
investment in transportation infrastructure. Good source of industry-related news
and legislative information.
- Better Roads: for the Government/Contractor Project Team
- Focuses on the government/contractor project team involved in federal,
state, county, city and township highway, road and bridge construction,
winter maintenance, roadside and vegetation management, and other
highway-related projects.

construction and work zones, traffic conditions, road conditions, weather conditions and forecasts, safety tips, maps and route planners, speed limits, and gas mileage and prices.
- Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
- The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) coordinates highway
transportation programs in cooperation with states and other partners to enhance the
country's safety, economic vitality, quality of life, and the environment. Major
program areas include the Federal-Aid Highway Program, which provides federal financial
assistance to the States to construct and improve the National Highway System, urban and
rural roads, and bridges. This program provides funds for general improvements and
development of safe highways and roads.

and highways that communicate information that helps road users travel
safely. This guide provides design standards. See also

- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
- Federal agency responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle
crashes. This is accomplished by setting and enforcing safety performance standards for
motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment, and through grants to state and local
governments for highway safety programs. Administers the CAFE (Corporate Average
Fuel Economy) Standards under the Automotive Fuel Economy Program. This has a major
impact on automotive manufacturers and consumers.
