Finding Books @ UNT

UNT has a number of useful environment-related books in the collection.

  • ALWAYS use the UNT Library CATALOG to locate the CALL NUMBER for the book you are looking for
  • The catalog can be accessed from the Libraries' home page
  • To search for books on a particular topic or discipline, use the KEYWORD option. Type in your keyword(s). Remember that books often cover a broad spectrum of information. If you don't find any useful items, think of synonyms or broader terms and repeat the search.
  • Books on similar topics are usually shelved in the same call number range. Browsing the call number range of a "useful" book found in the catalog may lead to finding other relevant books.
  • We have only recently begun to include table of contents information. Older items have very little information that can be searched. You may find it more helpful to use Amazon.com or another source that provides lots of searchable information to find the books, and then check the UNT Library Catalog to see if the Libraries owns the books
  • You can request books to be added to the collection. We appreciate your input. Please contact me if you have suggestions for the collection.

Finding all published books

Since academic libraries, including UNT, are only able to purchase selected books that are closely related to the research and educational needs of students and faculty, we do not normally have "everything" that is written on a topic in our collection.

There are a number of ways of finding out what books are "out there".

Amazon.com does a good job of providing access to most titles. You may want to use the advanced book search so you can limit the search. Also Barnes and Noble but not quite as good for the "heavy" science items.

Publisher web sites. Most of these now have e-mail alerts or RSS feeds that you can set up to be notified when new items are published.

WorldCat. This is a resource available through the "Find Articles" option on the UNT Libraries home page. Click on the W and scroll down. You will need to enter your EUID and password if accessing this off campus. WorldCat provides access to a number of library catalogs in the US and internationally. It's a bit clunky to search but does do a great job of showing you what books and other published items are available on your topic.

If we don't own the item you are looking for (remember to check the UNT Library Catalog by item and then keyword), we can borrow it from another library using interlibrary loan About ILLiad or you can request that we purchase it for you. Send me an e-mail (Beth.Thomsett-Scott @ unt.edu) with the title and other information on the item.
