UCRS 1000: Building Business Leaders for Tomorrow

Databases:

Three Database Exercises.  Time: 30 minutes. 

OBJECTIVE: to profile Apple Inc. and the computer hardware & software manufacturing industry.

To Access and Search:

From the library electronic resources pages, click on the letter B (for the letter of the database). Scroll down and click on Business Source Complete (off campus enter EUID and Password).

Database 1:

Business Source Complete via Ebscohost is a UNT Libraries' subscription.  It provides full text and summaries of articles in journals, magazines, newspapers and periodicals covering a wide range of topics in business and industry. For best remote access, use Internet Explorer or FireFox.

  • Covers marketing, management, MIS, accounting, finance and economics.
  • Provides full text industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses and more.
  • Sample search: Apple Inc.
    1. In the search box, type Apple Inc.
    2. In the circle choices, click on the one that says “COMPANY”
    3. Click SEARCH
    4. From the list, choose the company you want (Apple Inc.)
    5. Click ADD
    6. Click SEARCH
    5. Now with your results you can choose the type of data you need (look at COMPANY PROFILES, SWOT ANALYSES,  INDUSTRY PROFILES, MARKET RESEARCH REPORTS, PRODUCT REVIEWS)

  • Alternate search:
    1. Click NEW SEARCH.
    2. Go to the ADVANCED SEARCH screen and type Apple Inc. and a keyword (use subject terms on the left to guide you).
    3. Click SEARCH.
    4. Look at your results; if too many results (or too few), click REFINE SEARCH and try again.

EXIT BUSINESS SOURCE COMPLETE.

 

Database 2:

Hoover's Online  [a UNT Libraries' subscription]

  • Subject coverage: Business directory thoroughly covering around 18,500 companies.  It also furnishes brief information on nearly 13 million additional companies.
  • To Access and Search:
    From the library electronic resources
     pages, click on the letter H (for the letter of the database). Scroll down and click on Hoover's Online (off campus enter EUID and Password).
  • Sample search: Apple Inc.
    1. In the COMPANIES search box, type Apple Inc.
    2. Click SEARCH.
    3. Click Apple Inc. (the first item on the list).
    4. Look at FULL OVERVIEW, HISTORY, FAMILY TREE, INDUSTRY, PRODUCTS/OPERATIONS, COMPETITORS, COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE, PEOPLE, NEWS, SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS, FINANCIAL DATA, SEC FILINGS.

EXIT Hoover's Online.

Database 3:

Occupational Outlook Handbook (Bureau of Labor Statistics http://www.bls.gov/oco/ )

In the search box, look up your career and find associations listed at the bottom of the page pertaining to your career.

Sample business association: American Management Association http://www.amanet.org/

It's a good idea to join your association.  Many associations have inexpensive student memberships.  It's a great way to learn about your working conditions and employment prospects.  Also, it helps you to start networking, research the hidden job market, and look for internships.
