SOCI 3550 library instruction session by Lilly Ramin for Instructor Alison Herring on April 6, 2010 in room ENV 110.
- Class page includes tips on finding research for SOC 3550 and ways to get help
CATALOG (for books): http://iii.library.unt.edu/
Keyword to subject steps : Go to the library catalog from library homepage, type in your keyword and click search
With results, click on the title of a result that looks relevant and view subject terms (or you can type AND to add term)
DATABASES (for articles): http://irservices.library.unt.edu/
From the A-Z list of electronic resources, click on the letter S. Scroll down and click on SocIndex. We will add databases.
After entering your EUID/password, click advanced search to get the “AND” box. Click Choose Databases to add EBSCOhost databases such as Academic Search Complete, Gender Studies Database, PsycARTICLES, and more.
Search tip for articles: search beyond just your event:
If you are picking a news event, you may need to expand your topic. For example if you are writing about an arson case in Chicago that happened this week, you may want to do a quick search for arson cases AND United States (or Chicago if available) and get general articles about people deliberately setting things on fire.
(not a cheerful example, I know). Remember to utilize the subject terms that the database gives you.
Why? This is because there may not be scholarly articles on your recent event in particular.
The general articles will give you some insight, then you can analyze based on the collective behavior theories you learned in class.
Limiting Results:
Limit your results by utilizing the database given Subject headings/terms (on the left column)
Limit your results to Full Text (complete articles -PDF, HTML) and Scholarly Peer Reviewed Journals (on right column)
Email articles to yourself for free (choose Citation Format and APA to get preferred citation with article)
If the article does not have PDF or HTML icon, try “articlelinker find full text” then the check the UNT catalog option.
If the article is not in our collection, electronic (via databases) or in print (as a bound journal at library), use ILL. Interlibrary Loan (ILL): http://www.library.unt.edu/ill . Simply create an ILLIAD account for requesting items.
NEWSPAPER SOURCES:
The library does not hold print newspapers. You can look at news websites for topics first.
Option 1: EBSCOhost has a newspapers in Newspaper Source. Go to the electronic resources page for letter N. https://www.library.unt.edu/ris/assets/catalog/newspapersource-pubdate.png/image_view_fullscreen

Option 2: Under the electronic resources heading on the library homepage click on Find E-Newspapers which leads to Library Press Display. Do a quick search for a topic you heard about (at the top).
