SLIS 5200: Introduction to Information Organization

Hello, my name is Rayne Vieger, and I am a Graduate Library Assistant at Discovery Park Library. The other GLAs and I have compiled the following to serve as a beginner's guide to assist you in successfully navigating the UNT Libraries and fulfilling your information needs. While this page has been tailored specifically towards SLIS 5200 students, the basic tools and principles are easily applicable to any of your UNT research endeavors. Our goal is to provide you with a solid starting point for your research.
Research
- UNT's Library Catalog - Subject searching is a very good method for searching. Searching by journal title is another effective method. Click here for a video tutorial on how to use the catalog.
- Interlibrary Loan (ILLIAD) - Request materials not owned or licensed by UNT, or distance learners can request materials from UNT for home delivery free of charge.
- Distance learning students Important: If you are a distance learner, make sure you select "Distance Learner" and not "Graduate Student" when you set up your ILLiad account.
- Library Materials Delivery Request Form - Allows students to request items to be delivered between the UNT libraries or request items from remote storage. There is usually a 24-hour turnaround, except on holidays and weekends.
- Electronic Resources and recommended Library and Information Sciences databases - Access thousands of journal articles from your web browser.
- eBooks on Ebscohost - (Formerly netLibrary) Access over 50,000 books.
- 10 Search Tips for LIS Graduate Students - Here are some search tips on how to find information.
- How to use Boolean Operators - Boolean operators help narrow or widen your search.
- Quick Reference - Here are a few excellent reference resources, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and fact books.
- Credo Reference - This is another excellent reference resource, containing encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographies, etc.
- Library and Information Sciences Subject Guide - One stop shop for library and information science research.
- Research Handouts - Tools to help advance your research skills.
Concept Briefing Research
- Concept Briefing Topics - A list of the CB topics with suggested research strategies and/or resources. I would recommend checking out ODLIS (Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science) and the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences as good starting points. These are great resources for basic, introductory information (including definitions!).
Writing and Citing
- Writing and citation style manual - Library and Information Sciences uses APA 6th edition as its writing style. You can also find a number of other online sources about APA and other citation styles here by using UNT's Scholary and Professional style manuals.
-
Purdue OWL APA Style Guide - The Owl at Purdue maintains an excellent site for help in formatting your paper, in-text citations, and reference lists according to American Psychological Association (APA) 6th edition standards.

Please also explore the two documents below, which provide both basic and advanced instruction:
UNT - Online Library Workshops
The UNT - Online Library Workshops page is a special "class" in Blackboard dedicated to hosting instructional workshops. Here you can access scheduled live workshops as well as find archived workshops on RefWorks, APA Citation, and various tools helpful in conducting research. There are plenty of handouts and other helpful materials available there too. To access UNT - Online Library Workshops, fill out this form. You will then be "enrolled" in this Blackboard class and will be able to access it from among your list of Blackboard classes.
