Finding Books and Articles

You can find suggested resources for philosophy topics directly linked here:

Finding Books

  • Go to the UNT Library Catalog: http://iii.library.unt.edu/
  • Search using the keyword or subject tabs for general books on your topic.
  • Search using the title or author tabs to find a specific book.
  • Write down the:
    • call number (example: PQ265 .T37 1996)
    • library location (example: Willis Library, 3rd Floor)
  • Look at a specific item's subject headings, near the bottom of the catalog record, to find similar books on that topic. You can click on the subject headings to find a list of related items.

How to Read Call Numbers

The Library of Congress call number system is an alpha-numeric sytem. To read the call number, simply note the first letter or letters of the call number. ("LA" would be shelved before "LB", "LC" before "LD", etc.) Numbers follow the initial letter or letters; these numbers are read as whole numbers. (A call number of "LA2" will be shelved before "LA4".)

Here is an example of how to read call numbers line by line:

Finding Articles

Find Articles Using Academic Search Complete

Academic Search Complete is a general-topic database in which you can find many articles. You can use it on campus, or at home (from home, you will be asked to log-in using your EUID). To use it:

Search Tips (Academic Search Complete)

  • For better results, click the "Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals" checkbox that appears below the "find" textbox.
  • To get more relevant results, you can use the "advanced search" tab at the top to combine search terms.
  • To locate articles in the results list, you can select the "PDF Full Text" or "HTML Full Text" link. If neither of these links appear, click the "Find Full Text" link to see if the UNT Libraries own that journal.
  • To limit your results to online articles, you can select the "limit to full text" checkbox underneath the "find" textbox.

Using Other Databases to Find Articles

There are a number of other databases (like Academic Search Complete) which you can search for articles. You can use these databases on campus, or at home (from home, you will be asked to log-in using your EUID).

Can't Find a Book or Article at UNT?

If you can't locate a specific book (or journal article) at UNT, you can request it through a service called interlibrary loan (or ILL). This is a free service for students and faculty. You can find out more about ILL here: http://www.library.unt.edu/ill/about-interlibrary-loan
