What are these codes? (1) they are government-assigned; (2) they classify industries; (3) most industry reference information is organized by these codes; (4) you have to know your codes to complete your assignments.

4. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

The VPN is an extra portal if you can't get into the Library's resources remotely.  You have to authenticate first.

Go to https://vpn.unt.edu Log on, authenticate with EUID and UNT password, and go through the screens until you get to the search blank where you can type in the trial’s URL.

Business & Company Resource Center (login required). DESCRIPTION: furnishes Company Profile, Company History, Industry Overview, Company Financials, Rankings, Products, Investment Reports.

Hoover's Online (login required). DESCRIPTION: covers 14,000 public and private companies worldwide. Includes company homepages, annual reports, company capsule, competitors, divisions, earnings, financials.

Plunkett Research Online (login required). DESCRIPTION: includes major industry trends, industry statistics, industry information, and major companies in the industry.

Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys (via S&P NetAdvantage; login required). DESCRIPTION: provides 30-page profiles on companies in 52 industries.

Reference USA (login required). DESCRIPTION: Find competitors in any state or metro area by keyword or SIC code.

Associations Unlimited (login required). DESCRIPTION: find associations with data about your industry.

6. Articles on Companies & Industries

Do a journal title search if you already know the title of your journal (sample journal title: Advertising World).

Do the journal title search in one or both of these: Online Catalog or the Serials Solutions electronic journals. This will tell you what database has your journal.

APA Style: The OWL site at Purdue University has prepared a basic guide to citing with the current APA style.

ABI Inform (login required). DESCRIPTION: Provides full text and abstracts of articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers covering a wide range of topics in business and industry.

Business Source Complete (login required). DESCRIPTION: Search by company name or industry. Also has Company Profiles, SWOT Analysis, Industry Profiles, Datamonitor reports. For best remote access, use Internet Explorer or FireFox.

Predicast's PROMT (login required). DESCRIPTION: do a keyword search to find company & industry articles including trade publications.

Lexis-Nexis News (login required). DESCRIPTION: wide range of company & industry info from newspapers. Click NEWS. Search for your industry. Restrict to HEADLINE & LEAD PARAGRAPH and restrict to US NEWSPAPERS & WIRES.

Texas Newspaper Collection via Newsbank (login required).  DESCRIPTION: Provides full text access to all the major Texas newspapers.


7. Demographic & Economic Resources

American Community Survey (U.S. Census Bureau). Age, race, income, labor force, commute time to work, home value. Comes out every year.

American Fact Finder (U.S. Census Bureau). Go to the sections: People, Housing, Financial Characteristics.

Business Roundtable's CEO Economic Outlook Survey Reported in the Wall Street Journal and other business sources. Comes out quarterly. Gives CEO expectations for the short-term economic outlook.

Commerce Connection (Lone Star Internet). Links to all the Texas chambers of commerce.

Conference Board Publishes the Consumer Confidence Index, the Consumer Internet Barometer, the CEO Confidence index, the Help Wanted Advertising Index, and other major indicators.

County Business Patterns (U.S. Census Bureau). Annual information about establishments with paid employees: number of locations, employment, and payroll, by industry and by size, for the U.S. states, metro areas, counties, and zip codes.

Economy at a Glance (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Provides brief economic profiles for states and metro areas.

Federal Reserve Beige Book Summaries Published 8 times a year. Includes economic activity for U.S. regions, including consumer spending, tourism activity, business spending, and real estate activity. Click here for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, United States: A Manpower Research Report. Provides employment trends including the economy in U.S. regions.

New Strategist Publications (click for call #s and locations).  These furnish extensive U.S. demographic statistics for marketing projects.

North Central Texas Council of Governments
(NCTCOG). Extensive demographic information including population, housing, land use, cost of living, economic development, wage and income data, major employers, transportation issues, unemployment rate.

Regional Councils of Governments and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (ABAG). Links to the regional state government councils that promote planned growth and regional collaboration. These websites frequently provide demographic, economic, & employment information.

Rutgers University Libraries/Research Guides/Marketing Research "This guide includes pointers to several important sources of statistical data on income, consumption, and demographics, to help you understand and define the market for your product or service."

State and Local Resources (SBA.gov). Find helpful suggestions regarding starting and running a small business.

Texas Ahead (Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts). “Your one-stop portal to economic resources” in the State of Texas.

Texas State Data Center, Office of the State Demographer). Texas population profile.

United States Chambers of Commerce (World Wide Chamber of Commerce Guide). Chamberfind.com is a directory of websites of the chambers of commerce of the 50 states.
