Ancestry's Social Security Death Index   "Contains the records of deceased persons who possessed Social Security numbers and whose death had been reported to the SSA.  The information is generated from the U.S. Social Security Administrations Death Master File."

A Biography of America  Created to be used in conjunction with the telecourse and video series of the same name, the web site lists the transcript of the video program, key events of the period, a map relevant to the period, and a "Webography" of helpful links.

Biography.com   Maintained by A&E New Media, this searchable database contains over 20,000 different people from the past to the present. 

Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938  This online reproduction of the  seventeen-volume Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the United States from Interviews with Former Slaves contains more than 2,300 first-person accounts of slavery and 500 black-and-white photographs of former slaves.

Distinguished Women of Past and Present  Contains biographies of women that have contributed to our culture from the past to the present day.      

Explore Your Family History at Ellis Island  The American Family Immigration History Center (AFIHC) allows visitors to search passenger records from ships that brought 22 million immigrants to Ellis Island, between 1892 and 1924.

The Nobel Prize Internet Archive  Lists and provides biographical sketches of the Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Economics, and Physiology and Medicine.

Political Graveyard  Provides the final resting places of 34,000 American politicians, judges, and diplomats with the ability to search alphabetically, by state and offices held, by date of birth or    death, type of death and many other categories.   Cemeteries and memorial sites are listed by state and county, and a gazetteer is included with city and county maps.      

Presidents of the United States  Sponsored by the Internet Public Library, POTUS contains "background information, election results, cabinet members, notable events, and some points of interest on each of the presidents."

Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery  From the Smithsonian Institution.  Search the collection records of the National Portrait Gallery and the research records of the Catalog of American Portraits.
