ENGL 1310: College Writing I (Newspapers)

The following newspaper sources are provided to help English 1310 students better understand how to find and use newspaper articles both on the Web and through UNT's electronic resources.

 

Access the New York Times on the Web:

The New York Times is one of the largest and most popular daily newspapers in the United States.  The New York Times on the Web provides searching capabilities and access to the current issue.  Student's can access the New York Times on the Web by clicking on the following link: http://www.nytimes.com/

Once in the New York Times website, you may browse through the current issue of the New York Times on the Web or you can also search by topic, using the search box.

Use LexisNexis Academic to search and browse past issues of the New York Times and other newspapers:

UNT provides access to archives of the New York Times as well as many other newspapers through LexisNexis Academic. To access LexisNexis Academic:

  • Start at the UNT Libraries' home page: http://www.library.unt.edu
  • Click on "Electronic Resources"
  • Choose the Letter "L", below "Browse Index and Abstract titles by name"
  • Select LexisNexis Academic from the list of database titles.
  • If you are off-campus, you will be asked to log in with your EUID and EUID password.
  • The LexisNexis interface will look like this:

  • Click on the blue "Sources" tab from the left side of the page to choose the New York Times or any other newspaper

  • Then type "New York Times" or the name of any other newspaper you would like to find in the keyword box and click the red "find sources" button
  • Click on the correct title from the list of titles and select the red "ok-continue" button.
  • The title of the newspaper you selected will be displayed in the "Select Source(s)" area and now you can choose specific dates from the dropdown menu or use the "search terms" box to search by topic within that particular newspaper.

Use Alternative Press Index to find newspaper and journal articles

For non-mainstream viewpoints, try searching the Alternative Press Index.  Alternative Press Index includes articles gathered from alternative sources of information, indexing nearly 300 alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines covering cultural, economic, political and social change. In the Alternative Press Index, students will find publications that deal with poverty, feminist issues, and socialism, among other things. Titles available through API include Adbusters, American Indian Quarterly, The Ecologist, Freethought Today, and The Gay and Lesbian Review.   

You can access the Alternative Press Index this way:

  • Start at the UNT Libraries' home page: http://www.library.unt.edu
  • Click on "Electronic Resources"
  • Choose the letter "A" below "Browse Indexes and Abstracts by title"
  • Select Alternative Press Index from the list of database titles
  • You will be asked to log in with your EUID and EUID password if you are off-campus
  • The search interface will look like this:

  • You can perform a keyword search by typing your search terms into the search box and clicking "search"
  • OR you can browse the publication titles by selecting the blue "publications" tab at the top of the page:

  • Select the name of the publication you would like to view and click "search"

 

 

Browse E-Newspapers

Another excellent source for current events is E-Newspapers, which provides access to newspapers from around the world, available through the UNT Libraries' home page.  To access the E-Newspapers website:

  • Start at the UNT Libraries' home page: http://www.library.unt.edu
  • Click on the link that says "Find E-Newspapers", right under "Electronic Resources"
  • The E-Newpapers search box is located at the top of the screen:

*Search tips: use truncation (*) to find alternate endings of words, such as butterfl* to find butterfly or butterflies; use synonyms or words that mean the same or similar to your term; separate search terms with the word "AND"; or try removing some terms for better results.

The UNT Libraries will be closed Saturday, May 26 through Monday, May 28 for the Memorial Day weekend. The Libraries will reopen during regular building hours on Tuesday, May 29.
