1. What is the UNT Scholarly Works collection?
UNT Scholarly Works is the institutional repository for the UNT community. This repository is a special collection hosted in the UNT Digital Library. Users can search across the entire digital library holdings or within specific collections. This collection brings together the scholarly work of the UNT community and is accessible here.
2. How is using the UNT Scholarly Works collection different from posting research on my own web site?
This collection provides full-text indexing of items with printed text, a permanent web address, and long-term storage of your work. Putting items in the collection also gives you flexibility to make copyrighted or embargoed items searchable and findable by the UNT community and other researchers while maintaining access restrictions.
3. If my work is published, can I still submit it?
Published materials may be submitted to the UNT Scholarly Works collection if permission is granted by the publisher. For more information regarding publisher guidelines for a particular item, e-mail us at untrepository@unt.edu and we will help you determine the copyright policy.
4. How does the process work?
You submit your items to the repository staff including required information and as much or as little additional information as you want to give us. We reformat items as necessary so that they can be easily viewed online and create metadata records for each item. (We always keep a copy of the original format as well.) Items are then uploaded to the system and made viewable. User access is determined by your initial information or publisher guidelines.
5. Who can submit items?
The UNT Scholarly Works collection contains items submitted by the UNT community (faculty, staff and students). For more information, see the Submissions page.
6. How is the Scholarly Works collection related to Open Access?
UNT is currently considering a policy regarding access; as of March 9, 2011, the UNT Faculty Senate has voted to adopt an Open Access policy (available as a PDF here) which relates specifically to journal articles. If the university chooses to enact the policy, the UNT Scholarly Works collection will house items covered by the open access policy as well as other items created by the UNT community which are not governed by the document. Items in the UNT Scholarly Works collection may be "Open Access" (available for public use), or restricted to use by the UNT community; some access settings will be determined by publishers. For more information on UNT open access policies, see the homepage for Open Access @ UNT.
7. Are items in the collection still searchable if they are not viewable by the public?
Yes. All text items in the collection will be full-text searchable. If your items have embargoes which limit access, users will still be able to find the items, but they will only be able to view the metadata records (descriptions). For items limited to the UNT community, public users will be able to see only the metadata records but users affiliated with UNT will be able to sign in with their EUIDs to view the full text.
