Highlights of specific items in the collections: Dickens, Charles Dickens,
Charles [All
bound as one volume] This particular volume contains three different works published by T.B. Peterson & Brothers of Philadelphia. Two works are by Charles Dickens: Somebody's Luggage, and The Lamplighter's Story. The third work is After Dark, by Wilkie Collins. These three works were bound into a single volume which was owned by Benjamin S. Shaw, who inscribed his name inside the front cover.
Mr. Shaw also tipped-in to the volume an engraved portrait of Charles Dickens from another book. On the back of the portrait, he pasted in two tickets, for slip 16, seats 146 and 147 at Tremont Temple, Boston, for the American premiere of A Christmas Carol, as read by Charles Dickens. Below the tickets, Mr. Shaw wrote: "We heard Dickens read Christmas Carol & Pickwick at Tremont Temple, Dec. 2, 1867"
