The works shown here are selected entries from the 2003 Artists' Books Competition, and were exhibited in the Artists' Books Exhibition, held in the Rare Book Room of the Willis Library, January-February 2004.

Winner: 2003 Artists' Books Competition The Space Between Us Lisa Tristan Mellott 2003. Ceramic, hand-made paper, found objects. A series of 12 "French door hinge clay books", each containing two sections of hand-made paper with text. Below the text sections are compartments containing found objects. The volumes represent various ages of the artist's life, and the texts within the volumes contrast how the artist felt about her mother at those ages, and how the artist's mother felt about her mother at the same ages. Awarded the Friends of the UNT Libraries Purchase Prize (2 volumes), and presented to the Rare Book & Texana Collections. 4 volumes: Gift of the Artist to the Rare Book & Texana Collections. 6 volumes: Purchase, Rare Book & Texana Collections. Honorable Mention: 2003 Artists' Books Competition Love and Desire Betsy Berger 2003. Cloth, paper, wood, leather, commercially produced items, printed text. Assemblage created as a reliquary in the style of medieval works. The "reliquary" of white goatskin, linen, and Japanese Kozo, rests on four "feet" which are pink leather-covered nipples. The lower compartment of the reliquary contains the "sacred text", a commercially produced volume entitled Love and Desire, which has been rebound in quarter-sewn oak and alum-tawed pigskin using a Carolingian style method. The upper section of the "reliquary" houses the "relic," a pink leather-covered commercially produced phallus. Gift of the Artist to the Rare Book & Texana Collections. |

Snap-line Lines Eric Blake 2003. Cloth, paper, ink. Hand-bound book with pages featuring lithographs of lines. Book is bound on both edges, so it cannot be opened, creating an "inaccessible text", a theme that runs through the artist's works. |

Fall Star Book Monika Antonelli 2003. Paper, cloth, ribbon, feathers, ink, beads.
