Book in a Steel Box

2005.  Steel, cloth, paper.

Small cloth-bound volume with graphite lines throughout is welded into a steel box – a book that cannot be read, or an “inaccessible text,” a theme that runs through the artist’s work.

Awarded the Friends of the UNT Libraries Purchase Prize, and presented to the Rare Book & Texana Collections.

 Ceramic covers glazed black and hinged together with black cloth have incised lines filled with glass.
Artist’s Statement:
    This body of work address the many qualities a soldier obtains from war.  Many soldiers come home and are awarded with medals recognizing their numerous acts of honor and valor, yet while wearing these decorations they also will carry many other traits with them.

Artist’s Statement:
    By sarcastically representing the traditional roles of a wife, I hope to expose the ridiculous nature of wifely “duties.”

Pink patterned cloth covers this volume which consists of  ink-jet prints of images paired with statistics and text related to the images.
Artist’s Statement:
    Through the repetition of text and images, I hope to shed light on the media’s constant presentation of unrealistic female images and their negative effects on young women.

Artist's Statement:
     This series of work explores my experience of going on with life in this empty daze.  By photographing the environment around me, I used the camera to communicate how an emotional event [miscarriage] can trigger an altered physical state.

     [The book] speaks to a woman's experience when she is not able to have children.
