Rare Book and Texana Collections: Graduate Library Assistant

About the Program
The UNT Libraries offer full-time graduate students professional experience through their Graduate Library Assistantships and Graduate Research Assistantships. During the fall/spring semesters, these half-time positions provide stipends and benefits. Summer positions are paid hourly with limited benefits eligibility.
Position Description
As
a GLA, you will be an integral part of the Rare Book and Texana Collection staff and will assist in many different tasks.
Depending on your preferences and needs, you may be able to specialize
in one of the following areas:
- After thorough training in basic preservation procedures, provide necessary preservation treatments and proper housing for books and other materials.
- Assist in designing and in proper mounting of exhibits.
Cataloging
- After training in AACR2 and MARC formats, learn how to catalog rare books using OCLC and the Libraries’ online catalog.
- Assist in bibliographic research for cataloging of rare materials.
Regardless of specialization, you will have the core responsibilities listed below.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist patrons using materials in the Rare Book Room
- Assist with preparation and hosting of special events
- Help with the mounting and dismantling of exhibitions
- Perform various clerical and library tasks
- Assist the Curator and other full-time staff with special projects
Hours and Location
Average of 20 hours per week. The working schedule is negotiable but the normal operating hours of the Rare Book Room are Monday-Friday, 8am to 12noon and 1pm to 5pm. Most work takes place in Willis Library.
Duration
Spring 2010. Dependent upon funding, summer employment may also be available.
Minimum Qualifications
You must be a full-time graduate student and have prior relevant experience or complete at least nine graduate credit hours within your discipline with at least one course in research methods, basic information resources management, or information organization and control. You should also possess these qualifications:
- Strong commitment to public service
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- General experience with computers and various software products
- Willingness to acquire new skills in a rapidly changing environment
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Good office skills
- Manual dexterity
- Ability to lift 40 pounds
- Ability to use machinery and equipment while standing
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience and/or coursework in rare books, preservation, or cataloging
