Technical Notes
Signature Positions: centered on bottom of the page immediately underneath last line.
Catchwords: appear consistently through out the text. They are admirably accurate minus a few exceptions noted below with:
| p. 105-06 | Phoe- → Phoenicians |
This is not a mistake, but I note it because of the length of the catchword below, "contribution." Sometimes the catchword is long, and other times it is short, for example: ex- → exerted (190-91), BE- → BEFORE (p. 409-10), and enter- → entering (451-52). This could be the case of having multiple compositors (perhaps with different styles or even one being new to the job and unfamiliar with the printing house rules) or the type was low so they chopped the catchwords to compensate. |
| p. 116-17 | contribution. → contribution*. | Note the length of this catchword. The * leads to a footnote. |
| p. 229-30 | myfelf → obliged | |
| p. 255-56 | ---di → ------di | |
| p. 295-96 | I could → 'I could | All pages around this one put the leading apostrophe in the catchword. |
| p. 313-14 | I → I feel |
This is not necessarily a mistake, but it is inconsistent with other catchword uses. For example "I will" (p. 217), "I could" (p. 295), and "I HAVE" (p. 348) are catchwords used in this book, but in this instance the verb was left out of the catchword. I note this because it could be another case where there was more than one compositor that composed the type for this book or the printing house was low on the particular type for this font. |
| p. 493-94 | A → "A |
