Need
When I initially examined this book, spine crumbs rained onto the table. Both
of the front and back boards, including several pages, were completely separated
from the text block at the inner hinges. The spine had long cracks, some major,
that worsened with each opening, and half of the cords were completely snapped;
the remaining cords were on the unfurl, and they all snapped as I examined the
book during formula hunting.
In order for this book to remain in its best
possible condition, it must be restored; otherwise it will deteriorate beyond
its already perilous state. Mary Durio, Curator of the Rare Book Room, invited
me to perform this rebinding project on one of the five volumes of this set.
They are all in poor shape and will be similarly repaired.
If scholars, students, and other curious individuals ever wish to examine this book, it is essential that the book be in better condition that it presently stands. Also, if the Rare Book staff wishes to use the item in a display, it must be healthier than buckling. Last, if the book is to ever stand on a shelf again, this action of preservation is mandatory.
