Final Binding Steps
Finally, I used PVA to paste the endpapers to the finished boards. Wax paper
was put between the endpapers as the glue was applied to paper. Then I used a
bone folder to flatten and remove any loitering bubbles. This step must be
performed carefully so as to make sure that the paper is even along the borders
as well as to ensure that the paper does not crimp.
This photo shows the Tie-up Drying Method thoroughly described in
Lhotka's ABC of Leather Bookbinding. The use of tight twine helps to
define and crease the leather to the cord.
The final step of the preservation process was to paste the bookplate back into the book. Rather than paste it onto the new endpapers, I chose to put it on the original verso facing the title page.
