Policies
Patrons: All visitors are welcome to view the exhibits, but use of the Rare Book Room for study is restricted to those patrons engaged in research with the Rare Book Room's collections.
Identification: Please present a valid photo ID (UNT, driver's license, passport) or a UNT Courtesy Card to use Rare Book Room materials. We require identification for security reasons as well as for keeping statistics. We will record your name, your ID number, the collections you use, and the date and time of your visit. The Rare Book Room is monitored by University personnel at all times.
Taking notes: Take notes in pencil. Stray marks made by pencil are far easier to remove than those made with ink. Pencils are provided for your use. Tracing from Rare Book Room materials is not allowed. Acid-free bookmarks are provided for your convenience.
Briefcases, book bags, and purses: Place briefcases, book bags, and purses on the floor near your seat. An uncluttered workspace is a safer environment for Rare Book Room materials.
Book cradles: Heavy, delicate, or damaged materials require special support for reading. We will show you how to use a book cradle to provide the needed support.
Turning pages: Brittle or oversized pages require special handling. Instead of turning the lower edge or the corner of pages between your thumb and forefinger, slide your entire hand underneath each page to support it as you turn.
Gloves: Fine bindings, especially those made of leather, can be damaged by the oils on our skin. We will provide you with cotton gloves for handling certain materials.
Protective enclosures: Rare, delicate, or damaged materials are sometimes housed in protective enclosures, such as clamshell boxes, portfolios, or Mylar wraps. We will remove such items for you and will replace them for you in their protective enclosures when you are finished.
Photocopies and scanning: A charge of 25 cents per page is required for photocopies of Rare Book Room materials. Rare Book Room personnel will determine which materials may be photocopied without risk of potential damage to the collection materials, and we will make the copies for you. We can also scan certain items with a charge of 10 cents per scan. You may provide your own storage media, or we will provide you with a CD for a cost of. In all instances, the Rare Book Room personnel strictly adhere to the provisions of copyright law in the reproduction of manuscript material, you may also be asked to sign a statement of indemnification.
Reserves: If you need to return to the Rare Book Room to continue working with specific materials, we will place them on our reserve shelf for you. Provide us with written notification of what materials you will need and when you expect to return. We will hold materials in reserve for five days before they are re-shelved.
