Volume XVI: The Durham Ritual

This volume consists of a service-book, mainly a collectar and capitulary, which is of considerable interest to the liturgiologist. It was written in Anglo-Saxon minuscule, probably in the south of England, during the first half of the tenth century. But the book soon went north, for it was used by the community of St Cuthbert while they were at Chester-le-Street during the second half of the tenth century, and the scribe Aldred, who added a vernacular gloss to the Lindisfarne Gospels, glossed this volume too. These two glosses together are our most important source for the Northumbrian dialect in the tenth century.
