Volume IX: The Moore Bede
This manuscript has for long been considered the oldest surviving copy of Bede’s ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY and has formed the basis of all printed editions. It may well be a production of the Jarrow Wearmouth scriptorium and may have been completed as early as 737, that is within two years of Bede’s death. Textually it holds a key position: by the ninth century, or perhaps already in the eighth, it was in France, and there it had a large progeny.
