Preservation Unit: Graduate Library Assistant
About the Program
The UNT Libraries offer full-time graduate students professional experience through their Graduate Library Assistantships and Graduate Research Assistantships. During the fall/spring semesters, these half-time positions provide stipends and benefits. Summer positions are paid hourly with limited benefits eligibility.
Position Description
Following on-the-job training in Preservation Unit procedures and repair techniques, you will be expected to work independently to provide the preservation services listed below. Public service is not part of this position. You will be supervised by the Preservation Librarian, attend weekly Preservation Unit staff meetings, and collaborate with Unit staff members. We make an effort to acquaint you with all aspects of an academic library preservation department.
Position Responsibilities
- assess general collections materials and recommend treatment plans
- complete basic and intermediate repairs
- construct custom enclosures (such as phase boxes and portfolio binders) for fragile materials
- update computer catalog records
- prep damaged materials for commercial rebinding
- process rebound or boxed materials
- additional duties which may include
- treating special collections materials
- assisting with special projects
- deacidification
- encapsulation
- sorting and rehousing archival collections
- pamphlet binding
- processing new materials
- staff and patron preservation education
Hours and Location
20 hours per week, between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm, Monday – Friday. The Preservation Unit is closed on the weekends.
The Preservation Unit is located off-campus in the Library Annex, 941 Precision Drive. Parking is free. The e-trans shuttle service does not run to the Annex.
Duration
Fall 2008- Spring 2009. Dependent upon funding, summer employment may also be available.
Minimum Qualifications
You must be a full-time graduate student and have prior relevant experience or complete at least nine graduate credit hours within your discipline with at least one course in research methods, basic information resources management, or information organization and control. You should also possess these qualifications:
- graduate major in any subject
- manual dexterity
- ability to lift 40 lbs.
- ability to use machinery and equipment while standing
Preferred Qualifications
- experience or coursework in preservation, conservation, book repair, museum studies, special collections, archives, library technical services, or the visual arts
- experience with Millennium or other ILS
- experience with Microsoft Access
- ability to read music
