Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
An IMLS National Leadership Grant for Advancing Digital Resources. For this project, the UNT Libraries, together with the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, the Educopia Institute/MetaArchive Cooperative, and the libraries of Virginia Tech, Rice University, Boston College, Indiana State University, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Arizona will develop and share a toolkit of guidelines, educational materials, and a set of software tools for life-cycle data management and preservation of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs).

Amon G. Carter Foundation
Grant to the UNT Libraries for “Texas Cultures Online.” In response to educators’ needs for more multimedia materials that support teaching about the many cultures of Texas, UNT seeks to digitize cultural heritage collections that represent various ethnic and cultural groups. Through funds provided by the Amon G. Carter Foundation, UNT will offer digitization mini-grants for collections of historically significant cultural resources. Humanities Texas
A project to develop and present online lesson plans for The Portal to Texas History that incorporate the interactive style of learning. See The Portal to Texas History’s Resources4 Educators.

A We the People grant to the University of New Mexico and the UNT Libraries for the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), “Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers.” The award funds digitization of New Mexico historical newspapers, and for the grant UNT serves as technical advisor for its partners at the University of New Mexico.

National Endowment for the Humanities
A We the People grant to the UNT Libraries for “Mapping the Southwest.” For this project, UNT will partner with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) to catalog and digitize 5,000 historic maps from the collections of UTA for online access through The Portal to Texas History. National Historical Publications and Records Commission
Grant to the UNT Libraries for “The Civil War and Its Aftermath: Diverse Perspectives.” For this project, the UNT Archives will digitize more than 22,000 pages of 19th century archival materials providing a contemporary look at the effects of the Civil War and its aftermath from different sides of the war. 2009

Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
An IMLS grant for “Classification of Government Websites in the End-of-Term Archive: Extending Depository Libraries’ Collection Development Practices.” In this project, UNT is partnering with the Internet Archive to classify, in accord with the SuDocs system, the materials in the 2008–2009 End-of-Term (EOT) Web, collected by UNT, which represents the entirety of the federal government’s public Web presence immediately before and after the 2009 change in presidential administrations. The project will also identify metrics to translate measurable units for selected materials in Web archives to units more familiar to libraries and more recognizable by university administrators. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
As a partner in the Texas Heritage Digitization Initiative (THDI), the UNT Libraries’ Portal to Texas History has partnered with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) for the grant, “Train to Share: Interoperability Training for Cultural Heritage Institutions.” TSLAC is the lead organization for the three-year project to develop state-wide workshops, adapted from the Library of Congress “Cataloging for the 21st Century” series, to provide training on interoperability measures of digitization projects, and principles of sharable metadata developed in a project previously funded by IMLS.

Summerlee Foundation
Grant to the UNT Libraries for “Rescuing Texas History.” Through funds provided by the Summerlee Foundation of Dallas, The Portal to Texas History will offer digitization mini-grants for at-risk local history materials. Texas State Library and Archives Commission
UNT received an LSTA Cooperation grant to microfilm, digitize, and provide free public access to the Bartlett Tribune from 1902-1978. See The Bartlett Tribune.

Texas State Library and Archives Commission
The Portal team and the Center for American History at UT have received a TexTreasures grant for digitizing “Early Texas Newspapers: 1829-1861,” a comprehensive grant to microfilm, digitize, and provide free public access to the earliest Texas newspapers held by the Center for American History. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
A grant for “Optimizing the User Experience in an Architecture for Rapid Development.” The UNT Libraries will develop a model for an iterative user-centered design process in a rapid development framework that digital libraries can implement to improve the usability and effectiveness of their resources for targeted user groups. This project will focus on the information-seeking behavior and needs of genealogists, who constitute a third of all digital library users. Summerfield G. Roberts Foundation
Grant to the UNT Libraries for the Adopt a Book Digitally program. This gift will allow us to digitize nearly 250 books from the participating partners for this project: UNT, Austin College, the Star of the Republic Museum, Austin Public Library and Dallas Public Library. Selected books will include city and county histories, city directories, biographies of notable Texans, and other Texana titles.

Humanities Texas
​Grant to the UNT Libraries to launch an initiative to develop and present online lesson plans that incorporate the interactive notebook style of learning. In total, twenty lesson plans will be developed by master teachers accomplished in creating this type of innovative curriculum. This project is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. See the lesson plans in My Texas History Notebook.

The Summerlee Foundation
Grant to the UNT Libraries for phase II of “Rescuing Texas History through the Digitization of At-risk Photographs and Maps.” Through funds provided by the Summerlee Foundation of Dallas, The Portal to Texas History offers digitization mini-grants for at-risk local history materials. The awardees include the Anderson County Historical Commission; Austin History Center, Austin Public Library; Bosque County Historical Commission; Childress County Heritage Museum; Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History; Dallas Heritage Village; FBC Heritage Museum Unlimited; First Christian Church, Port Arthur; Heritage House Museum, Orange; Historic Rose Marine Theater; Kemah Historical Society; Museum of the American Railroad; Palestine Public Library; Sanger Public Library; Sulphur Springs Public Library; Texas Lutheran University; and Val Verde Historical Commission. Forrest C. Lattner Foundation
Grant to the UNT Libraries and its partners the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, the Denton Public Library, and Texas Woman’s University for “From Plowshares to Diplomas: Digitizing Early Denton History,” which will focus on local Denton history. See the Denton materials.

Humanities Texas
Grant to the UNT Libraries and the Deaf Smith County Public Library to digitize 3900 large format negatives of historic photographs of Deaf Smith County. This collection represents a wealth of primary source images that document the people, places, and culture of Hereford and the surrounding county. By presenting resources that are not widely available, the “Deaf Smith County: Frontier Communities of the Llano Estacado” project will benefit all Texans by highlighting an under-represented area that richly illustrates Texas’s cattle and farming tradition. This project is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. See the Deaf Smith County Library collection.

Grant to the UNT Libraries and nine partner institutions to digitize items illuminating the life and career of Lorenzo de Zavala, empresario, statesman and Texas revolutionary. Participants are University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at Arlington, Southern Methodist University, the Texas State Archives, the San Jacinto Museum of History, the Dallas Historical Society, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Library, the Texas General Land Office and the Sam Houston Regional Library. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
As a partner in the Texas Heritage Digitization Initiative (THDI), the UNT Libraries’ Portal to Texas History will play an important role in supporting a statewide digital gateway through the Library of Texas at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. THDI is a cooperative project to identify, describe, digitize, preserve, and make broadly accessible special collections of Texas history and culture held by libraries, archives, museums, and historical societies in Texas. For this grant initiative, The Portal to Texas History team will develop and integrate an Open Archives Initiative (OAI) harvester into its existing architecture, to support another means of providing access to materials from diverse institutions. In addition, new content will be added to The Portal to Texas History, and in turn to the Library of Texas, from partners at the Jacob Fontaine Religious Museum, the Boyce Ditto Public Library, the Marshall Public Library, the Weatherford College Library, the Weslaco Bicultural Museum Society, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP)
Grant to the collaborative partnership of the California Digital Library, New York University, and UNT to create a research program that will develop partner networks and infrastructure for archiving Web-based material, and will address effective strategies for the capture, curation and persistent management of these materials. Summerlee Foundation
Grant to the UNT Libraries to support project development for The Portal to Texas History. This generous gift covers travel, distribution and development of promotional materials.

Tocker Foundation
Grant to Alvord Public Library to digitize various local records including Alvord incorporation papers; minutes of the town board, 1888-1917; and the Audubon town history. Materials were digitized at UNT and made accessible through The Portal to Texas History. See the Alvord materials.

TexTreasures
Grant to the UNT Libraries to digitize over 7,000 pages of historical content, “From Republic to State: Debates and Documents Relating to the Annexation of Texas, 1836-1856.” The material includes books, pamphlets, maps, letters and land grants. See the Annexation materials.

State of Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF)
Grant to the UNT Libraries to create a technical structure for The Portal to Texas History. The grant covers the cost of hardware and software to assist with discovery, preservation and file management for digital collections.
