Every Tuesday during the Spring 2018 semester, Discovery Park Library will host a Factory workshop intended to help teach you about certain topics or skills you might be interested in. Workshops are hands-on events hosted by one of our maker-techs.

Each session, our maker-tech will have a prepared presentation, a selection of resources from The Factory for use, checkouts, and discussions/demonstrations. We will also use this time to schedule in-space consultations when requested.

  • When: 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. each Tuesday in February, March, and April
  • Where: Discovery Park Library, Room B112

Maker John will discuss 3D printers, troubleshooting, design, gcode, and so forth. In addition, he will be prepared to discuss:

  • All resources available in the Factory
  • Differences and why you would use one method over another
  • In-depth with individuals who have questions or want to go further in the February session
  • The Factory in general and other drop-in questions

Unity Game Design for Virtual Reality

Tuesday, April 3
3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Discovery Park Library, Room B112

Video game development is impossible without a game engine to build it on. More than 1.3 million developers use the Unity engine on platforms as basic as mobile devices to the cutting edge of virtual reality headsets. Its versatility makes it a great way to learn how to make games of your own!

You will learn how to:

  • Use various tools within the Unity development engine
  • Create and sculpt fascinating 2D, 3D, and virtual reality environments
  • Build your personal VR space that you can come back and visit!
  • Use what you make in the HTC Vive VR headset

Soldering and Electronics

Tuesday, February 27 | Tuesday, April 10
3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Discovery Park Library, Room B112

Maker John will discuss soldering, including concept, terminology, safety and teach through-hole soldering with a kit to build a memory game. He will also:

  • Have our sonar robot build as a demonstration or host further discussion that shows pulling together the coding from a microcontroller and using soldering to build a rover
  • Discuss The Factory and answer other drop-in questions

We will also use this time to schedule in-space consultations when requested.

3D Design/Modeling

Tuesday, March 16 | Tuesday, April 17
3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Discovery Park Library, Room B112

Maker John will consult, instruct and teach 3D modeling concepts using Blender or TinkerCAD, including (but not limited to):

  • Overview of the application
  • Which application may be best suited for a given project or preference
  • Using Blender to build an object up to animation
  • The Factory in general and other drop-in questions

We will also use this time to schedule in space consultations when requested.
