Libraries Receive IMLS Grant
The UNT Libraries have received a two-year, $631,720 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to investigate collection development needs related to online government information.
Working with partner Internet Archive, project investigators will attempt to classify materials from the 2008-2009 End-of-Term Web Archive using the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) Classification System, allowing librarians to easily select archived materials for their collections.
In addition, investigators will develop measurable units for selected materials in Web archives--allowing archived materials to be quantified in a way that is "more familiar to libraries and more recognizable by university administrators."
For more details on the project, please see the UNT News Service story at http://web3.unt.edu/news/story.cfm?story=11639.

Traditionally, academic library outreach has meant reaching out to the campus community, providing services to faculty and students. Many universities and colleges, however, now have a new or renewed emphasis on outreach beyond the campus, seeking to ensure their institutions' relevance to the community at large. How can and do academic libraries participate in this type of outreach? What types of collaborations or partnerships are academic libraries forming with schools, public libraries, or community groups? How do academic librarians partner with faculty or campus departments on their community projects? What role does service-learning play? Nancy Courtney has assembled a sampling of approaches, from the innovative to the tried-and-true, each written in the voice of its strongest champion.

Video games at the Media Library
The Collection
In summer 2009, the Media Library decided to incorporate video games into the collection. To celebrate the launch of this new collection, two Game On!: Fun, Films and Gaming at the UNT Libraries events were held at the Media Library and Willis Library. Students came from across campus to meet new people and play games like Guitar Hero, Super Smash Brothers, Halo and more. On September 2, The Media Library opened up circulation of the video game collection to UNT students, faculty and staff. Currently, the collection contains games for the Wii, XBox 360 and PS3 consoles.

TXT 4 Answers: My Info Quest Text Reference Service Launches
East Peoria—July 16, 2009
It’s official! People are now sending more text messages than they are making cell phone calls. Librarians are aware of the popularity of texting and are ready to take their professional services to cell phones.
Starting July 16th, patrons of approximately 50 libraries from all over the US, including UNT Libraries are able to text a question to (309) 222-7740 and a real, live librarian will respond within minutes. The service is free of charge, but standard text messaging rates do apply. Staffed by librarians from around the country, answers are sent to cell phones by librarians in 320 characters or less, or the equivalent of two 160-character text messages.
It’s a different way of helping people get the answers they need, wherever they are at the time, with professional assistance. The service, named My Info Quest is the first collaborative text messaging reference service of its kind. Other partners include San Jose State University Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Abilene Christian University, Adams State Universitym, Alliance Library System, Dakota State University, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Nebraska at Omaha and University of South Florida at Tampa.
The hours of service will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-10 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information about My Info Quest and for a list of participating libraries, check out http://www.myinfoquest.info.
The Portal to Texas History Launches Redesigned Web Site
We are proud to announce the official release of the updated Portal to Texas History.
Working with the Multimedia Development Lab, the Digital Projects Unit
redesigned the entire site. We also restructured and migrated all of
the Portal content to a new digital asset management system developed
in-house.
This work is part of an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funded
research project investigating the information seeking behavior of
genealogists, a significant user group of digital libraries. The
project continues through the end of November, and further usability
and utility testing will inform enhancements to the Portal planned for
the fall of 2009. When the project concludes, the Web site will
include several new updates based on user-centered feedback.
We hope that you will enjoy using the new Portal and return often to discover our latest content and enhancements.
Doc Spot returns in the Fall
This film series will return in the Fall as The Doc Spot. Our first screening will be the Academy Award nominated documentary Trouble the Water, September 1 - 4. Check back later this summer for a full schedule.
