The Collected Recordings of Gérard Souzay

In his discography The Recorded Performances of Gérard Souzay (Greenwood Press, Westport, CT), Manuel Morris chronicles the 43-year singing career of lyric baritone Gérard Souzay.  Born Marcel Tisserand, December 8, 1918 in Angers, France, Souzay studied the tenets of mélodie interpretation with Bernac and Croiza, as well as opera with Vanni Marcoux. In 1945 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, and gave his first recital the same year. After World War II, he became internationally known as a recitalist. In 1960, he made his opera debut at Aix-en-Provence Festival, then in New York at the New York City Opera.  He was also known throughout Europe, and highly acclaimed in Germany, for his interpretation of lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and others.

The University of North Texas Music Library received a gift from the estate of  Manuel Morris, which includes the research materials and manuscripts for the discography. The extensive collection of the recordings that Mr. Morris used in his research was also included with this generous gift.

The purpose of this online resource is to provide a way for locating desired recordings in the collection of over one hundred and forty LP's, twenty-one 78 rpm records and four CD's. This is accomplished by providing charts sorted by various pieces of information such as album titles, works titles and composers. The charts include details for format of recordings, manufacturer's numbers, the page numbers in the discography and the library's numbers that will help determine the locations of recordings.  Information is sorted into two main lists. Use the links in the navigation bar to see the desired list. Even though the columns of information remain in the same order from chart to chart, the rows of information are resorted.  This resource is not designed to provide detailed information regarding individual recordings. The discography provides this information. The page numbers listed in the "Morris Page Number" column indicates the page number in the discography.

The discography is organized three ways: chronologically, by composer and titles, and by recording manufacturers. Indexes detailing record labels, catalog numbers and artists are included. The online resource is best used with Mr. Morris' discography when detailed information concerning recording dates, companies, record labels and other artists on the recordings is desired. The online resource will help locate particular recordings in the UNT Music Library.
