TOSCANINI TAPES
Don Gillis produced The Man Behind the Legend radio series from June 5, 1963 to December 27, 1967. The programs were divided into fourteen series. An additional four series ran between January 4, 1967 - December 27, 1967 under the title The Centennial Series, in honor of the Maestro's hundredth birthday.
The broadcasts consist of music performed over the airwaves by the NBC Symphony Orchestra from 1937-1954. Interviews with composers, conductors, orchestra members, and other people associated with Toscanini and the broadcasts are played at intermission. There are also features that chronicle Toscanini's life, starting in Parma and ending with his career in the United States.
The Don Gillis Collection of Toscanini Tapes is split into three sections: The Man Behind the Legend broadcasts, The Centennial Series broadcasts, and the interview source tapes. For a complete inventory of each section or series, click on the links below.
