Music Library Reserves
Course Reserves
The Music Library houses reserves for music classes. Materials on reserve in the Music Library may include books, scores, recordings, photocopies, or other personal items. Different policies and procedures apply to the various formats:
- Books and Scores
There are two options for putting books and scores on reserve. The most common option is to have materials on reserve behind the Music Circulation Desk. Students request the materials from the worker at the desk and may keep the materials for two hours at a time. The other option is to reserve a carrel for the class and have the materials on reserve on this carrel. Students in the class have access to the reserve items without requiring assistance from a library worker. This option is particularly effective for seminars and other small classes in which a small number of students need access to large quantities of materials. Items on carrels may circulate for two hours, twenty-four hours, or three days, according to the instructor's discretion. Carrel reservations are limited, so it is imperative to make arrangements for a carrel early in the semester or before the semester begins. Contact Janelle Anderson West to reserve a carrel.
- Recordings
Compact discs, LPs, and cassette tapes may be placed on reserve in the Audio Center. Any student may listen to these materials, but no-one may take them out of the library without written permission from the professor(s) for whom the items are on reserve.
To put audio items on reserve, the professor should submit a list of listening selections with the call numbers, preferably by e-mail. Once the items are placed on reserve, a short list, generally including composer, title, and call number will be placed in a notebook in the Audio Center. If a professor wishes to have a more detailed list, such as one that includes performers, he or she must provide that to the Audio Center.
For large classes, there are other options for handling reserve recordings. Please contact the Graduate Library Assistant for the Audio Center, Pamela Ward, for more details.
- Other Media
Video cassettes and DVDs from the Music Library's collection (call numbers MVC and MDVD, respectively) are placed on reserve in the Audio Center in exactly the same manner as are recordings. Arrangements can be made to place materials from the Media Library on reserve in the Audio Center for music classes on a case-by-case basis. Please speak to Pamela Ward about making arrangements for such classes.
- Personal Copy Materials
In cases in which the UNT Libraries do not own a copy of materials to which students in a class need access, it is possible to place a personal copy of the material on reserve. Such materials should be clearly marked with the owner's name. Personal copies of books and scores are housed behind the Music Circulation Desk and circulate for two hours within the library. Personal copies of sound recordings and video tapes are housed in the Audio Center, and may not be taken from the library by anyone other than the owner.
- Periodicals and Reference Materials
Periodicals and Reference Materials are not placed on reserve in the UNT Libraries.
Once items are placed on reserve, lists of classes and their respective reserves are placed in notebooks at the Music Circulation Desk and in the Audio Center. Also, a library user may find reserves for a particular class by searching by course number or professor name in the Course Reserves section of the online catalog.
Graduate Reserves
Graduate students working on long-term research projects may request a carrel. The Music Library has fifty-two carrels. Each carrel has a desk and a bookshelf, and eighteen carrels have power outlets as well.
Students who have reserved a carrel may ask to have books and scores placed on reserve on their carrels. Periodicals, non-circulating books and scores, and reference area materials may not be placed on graduate reserve. Reserve materials are shelved on the carrel and circulate for three days. It is inadvisable to leave personal items or materials that have been checked out on a carrel.
Processing of requests for Course Reserves takes precedence over processing requests for Graduate Reserves.
Carrel reservations are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Janelle Anderson West for reservations.
Requesting Materials for Reserve
Materials requested less than one week prior to class use will be processed as soon as possible, but the library cannot guarantee processing by the requested date. Submissions may be made by e-mail to Janelle Anderson West (for books and scores) or Pamela Ward (for recordings), or on paper. All requests should include the following information:
instructor name
instructor ID number
course number
date materials are neededtitle
author / composer
publication date
call number
Requests submitted without all of the above information will not be processed.
It is also helpful if a syllabus is submitted with reserve requests.
