American Periodical Series

ABSTRACT: A collection of early American periodicals and some tabloid state newspapers, the American Periodical Series (APS) includes journals dating from 1741 through 1935. These periodicals cover every aspect of early American life from the home and family to developments in science. Containing valuable source materials for the study of American ideas and social patterns, the APS series follows the development of the American magazine from two short-lived 1741 titles of Andrew Bradford and Benjamin Franklin, past the sometimes-called "golden age of periodicals" of the 1825-50 period, and down through the Civil War, Reconstruction and 1890's era. (Actually, runs of some continue into the 1930's.) In this collection, readers can find the earliest published works of many outstanding writers.

Holdings:
APS I --1741-1800; Microfilm. 33 reels.
APS II -- 1800-1850; Microfilm. 1,966 reels.
APS III -- 1850-1900; Microfilm. 200 reels. Set incomplete.

GUIDES: There are three series within the APS (18th century, APS I; 1800-1850, APS II; 1850-1900, APS III). For easy access to individual titles consult: Hoornstra, Jean. American Periodicals, 1741-1900: an Index to the Microfilm Collections...Ann Arbor: University Microfilms International, 1979. (Z6951. H65) The index is arranged in four sections: title index, subject index, editor index, and reel number index. Each entry supplies complete bibliographic information about title, publication volumes and dates, and publisher, plus an annotation describing the publication. Additional information is usually supplied, such as title variations, editors, volumes included on film, etc. In consulting the title index, note the appropriate APS series and reel number for the desired volume.

The subject index of the Hoornstra title is an alphabetical listing of the Library of Congress subject headings assigned to the periodical titles. Additional subject access tools to nineteenth century periodicals are Pooles' Index to Periodicals and Nineteenth Century Readers Guide (1890-99) in General Abstracts and Indexes.
