James Monroe
Papers of James Monroe (1758-1831), the 5th U.S. President. Included in this collection is correspondence, a large part of which relates to negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase and the Monroe-Pinkney treaty, the War of 1812, the Florida Purchase, South American Independence, and Virginia politics; an account book containing memoranda, official and personal accounts (1794-1802); and miscellaneous items. Correspondents include the early Presidents through Andrew Jackson; John Armstrong, Joel Barlow, John C. Calhoun, William H. Crawford, George W. Erving, Joseph Fenwick, Albert Gallatin, John Graham, Joseph Jones, Rufus King, Robert R. Livingston. John McLean, William Pinkney, John Randolph, Caesar A. Rodney, Richard Rush, John Taylor, Littleton W. Tazewell, St. George Tucker, and William Wirt. The Monroe Doctrine (1823) resulted from his term of office, 1817-1825.
