Abstract:

Papers of George Washington (1732-1799), the first President of the United States.  He was elected to two terms of office, 1789-1797, and was, in later years, referred to as the "Father of Our Country." Major events taking place while he was in office were  the first United States Census (1790), the District of Columbia was established (1791) and the Bill of Rights was ratified.
