Textiles, Costume, and Jewelry
Abstract: The Index of American Design, arranged into ten parts, was
created to compile and eventually publish a visual survey of the objects of decorative, folk, and popular arts made in America from the time of settlement to about 1900. Special techniques were evolved for the 15,000 drawings, or renderings, and they were produced with astonishing skill by American artists creating effects of texture, form and color more vividly realistic than photography.
The Catalog of Textiles, Costume and Jewelry is Part 1 of this collection and includes examples of costume, women's, men's and children's apparel, embroidery and needlework lace, crocheting, knitting, and quilting.
