The Art and Design of Utopian and Religious Communities
created to compile and eventually publish a visual survey of the objects of decorative, folk, and popular arts made in America from the time of settlement to about 1900. Special techniques were evolved for the 15,000 drawings, or renderings, and they were produced with astonishing skill by American artists creating effects of texture, form and color more vividly realistic than photography.
The Catalog of the Art and design of Utopian and Religious Communities is Part 2 of this collection. Communities such as Pennsylvania German, Shaker, Mormon, Quaker, American Indian and Spanish Southwest are represented by furniture, ceramics, utensils and tools, paintings, sculpture, leatherwork, interiors and architectural design.
