The Marburger Index: Photographic Documentation of Art in Germany
Abstract: The Marburger Index is a photographic collection of German art as well as art from other countries owned by German institutions. The collection consists of about 930,000 black-and-white photographs, taken between 1850 and 1976, illustrating architecture, painting, sculpture, and arts and crafts from the classical to modern times. The index is arranged topographically according to geographic sites, and has indices for artists, portraits, topography, and subjects organized by Iconclass. The Iconclass is an international subject classification system which provides numbers for complex ideas that would otherwise require a lengthy text.
