Abstract: The library of the Whitney Museum of American Art originated as the personal collection of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who founded the Whitney Museum in 1930. Since its inauguration, the library has emerged as a unique and important resource for the study of American art: it houses archives and a collection of over 10,000 books and catalogs. The library emphasizes 20th century American painting, sculpture, drawing and graphics. In addition, the library contains materail on Colonial and 19th century American art, folk art, and photography.
