Film & Video Collection on Aging

About the Film & Video Collection on Aging

The Film & Video Collection on Aging is intended to make audio-visual media on aging available to the widest possible audience.

The Collection is home to over 700 audio-visual titles concerned with different aspects of aging and long-term care, from feature films to clinical programs. The UNT Media Library maintains and circulates this collection of 16mm films and videos. All titles are available for rental by your institution for classroom showings or inservice education.

The Film & Video Collection on Aging at UNT consists of two originally separate collections: the Gerontological Film & Video Collection (GFVC) and the National Media Owl Award Video Collection (Owl).

History

History of the Gerontological Film & Video Collection

In 1970, the Texas Governor's Committee on Aging (now the Texas Department of Aging), in conjunction with the UNT Center for Studies in Aging, established a collection of films concerned with different aspects of aging and placed it in the UNT Libraries. The Collection also includes VHS videorecordings, slides, and filmstrips. The Gerontological Film & Video Collection is circulated and maintained by the UNT Media Library. Over 600 audiovisual titles are available for rental.

History of the National Media Owl Award Video Collection

The Owl collection was established at the UNT Media Library in 1996 with a three-year grant from the Retirement Research Foundation. In 2000, the collection was incorporated into the Film & Video Collection on Aging. Individual Owl titles may be found in the Media Library Catalog. The collection includes VHS videos only.
