Internet Search Engines

The following are some of the available World Wide Web search engines and directories. Most of them offer both general Web searching and directories, or Web sites arranged by category. Try them out, and see which ones work best for you.

General Search Engines

About.com: Features guides to topics by people whose credentials and interests are listed on their pages.

AltaVista: One of the largest search engines; allows limiting by language.  [help]

Ask.com: Supports natural language searching (example: How much does a plane ticket to Timbuktu cost?)  [help]

Dogpile: meta-search engine that queries eleven separate search engines and directories at once.

Excite: "More like this" links can lead to other useful sources; lists categories of sites grouped by topic. [help]

Go Network: Better than most at screening out irrelevant sites; lists categories of sites grouped by topic.

Google: A rapidly growing search engine that's better than most at screening out irrelevant sites, with a new Web directory.   [help]

HotBot: Search engine that allows limiting by date and type of page; lists categories of sites by topic.   [help]

Ixquick: A meta-search engine.

Mamma: Meta-search engine that queries ten separate search engines at once.

Search Engines Worldwide: A collection of search engines from all over the world, arranged by country and region.

Sources of Reliable Websites:   An annotated list of websites produced by reliable and knowledgeable sources, frequently academic, intended to help the searcher find factual information on the World Wide Web.

WebCrawler: Covers fewer sites, but one of the better search mechanisms for computer-related topics.    [help]

Yahoo!: The first major directory of Web sites; often the best place to start when searching very general topics.  [help]
