WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE

Participants will have the opportunity to:
  • Review effective SMS organizational structures, multidisciplinary practices, and technological applications implemented in other States;
  • Review and discuss the keys to implementing a successful SMS;
  • Discuss the benefits of various organizational structures, practices, and technologies used in implementing an SMS as well as the overall benefits of an effective SMS in providing critical information for transportation investment decisions;
  • Learn how States are improving the effectiveness of their Safety Management Systems by applying technologies such as GPS, GIS, and pen-based computers; and
  • Address potential "next steps" for SMS implementation within their State.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

The intended audience includes State, local and private sector personnel associated with any aspect of SMS implementation. The number attending will be limited to a total of thirty five (35) participants per course.

TAILORING THE COURSE

States requesting the course can tailor the three modules to fit their interests, by requesting more concentration on a particular module or modules, or parts of modules.

COURSE COST & ARRANGEMENTS

There are no instructor or course material costs. The host state selects and arranges for participant attendance, and provides the meeting facilities, together with the usual visual aid equipment and general meeting needs.

REVIEW OF COURSE CONTENTS

This course presents the relationship of the 8 SMS Management Elements to the 5 Major Safety Program Areas.

This course links the SMS to Organizational Approaches, Multidisciplinary Practices, and Technological Applications

The introduction includes the evolution of SMS, a review of the SMS implementation in the host state, a review of SMS provisions, and the relation of the Management Process to SMS.

Module I presents the organizational approach to developing an SMS in several states.

Module II presents examples of multidisciplin-ary practices, such as work zone safety, corridor safety, and safe community programs.

Module III presents various technological applications, including software applications.

TECHNOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS INCLUDE

Portable (pen) computers,
GPS location identification technologies, and
GIS applications.
