AP-73 'Work Zone Safety Inspection' Training Course
Working Well in the Zone

Ample guidance on the proper inspection of work zones is available to construction work zone inspectors, but additional instruction is needed for those who must inspect the work zone design in the field. Because proper work zone implementation and maintenance requires competent oversight and inspection., this project will develop a training curriculum and materials to teach State and local personnel to train, inspect and administer work zone traffic control and safety hardware. One pilot course presentation was conducted. The course materials (Instructor's Guide and Participant's Manual) were originally developed by the National Highway Institute's (NHI's) training course as #38063. These materials will be available to state and local trainers and LTAP administrators to develop a "customized" Inspector's Training Course with a "Trainer's Packet" for exhibits/displays and workshops.

LTAP/FHWA Regional Briefings for trainers are being scheduled. One briefing will be conducted in each FHWA Region hosted by an LTAP Center. Trainers may start training WZ inspectors soon after the trainers briefing. Trainers training materials and the LTAP briefings will be complete and distributed by June 1997. The LTAP centers will administer the training programs with each state.

LTAP centers.
