AP-101 Safety Outreach Initiatives
Educating Highway Users in Words and Visuals

This project focuses on innovative techniques to heighten highway safety awareness. The primary emphasis is on creating new partnerships and using their combined abilities to reach highway users. Projects or activities supported include those that deliver safety information to the general public.

For example, a full-color National Highway Users Manual has been developed to educate highway users about many of the unique messages that signs, signals, and markings send for safe vehicle operation. An innovative stand-alone interactive highway safety kiosk has also been developed to heighten safety awareness with sight, sound, and text that involves the user directly in the education process.

A previous effort in this area which remains active is the North Carolina Safety Exposition. The Office of Technology Applications provided financial and technical assistance to the North Carolina Governors' Highway Safety Office for a mobile safety exposition. High-tech animation, video, and set decorations are used to send messages to the public on compliance with traffic control devices and positive delineation. Also, messages on drunk driving and seatbelt and airbag use are communicated in other parts of the exposition.

The Highway Users Manual has been produced and was made available in FY 1996. Public and private sector partners for its printing and distribution are being sought. The kiosk was also developed and is being demonstrated at safety expositions and conferences through FY 1997-98.

Application should be made to FHWA for access to the National Highway Users Manual and the interactive highway safety kiosk. Private partnerships provide financial support along with NHTSA, FHWA, and the State of North Carolina. The mobile North Carolina Safety Exposition remains on tour and visits major sporting events and population centers.

AP-101 remains open for unique projects and efforts that communicate highway safety messages to the public.
