ATTORNEY GENERAL JANET RENO, AAG JOEL I. KLEIN ISSUE STATEMENTS ABOUT INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT


The International Competition Advisory Committee today submitted to the Department itsfinal report on international antitrust and competition policy issues. This report is only thethird advisory committee report on antitrust issues in the history of the Antitrust Division,and the first on international issues. Attorney General Janet Reno and Assistant AttorneyGeneral Joel I. Klein of the Antitrust Division issued the following statements:

Attorney General Reno:

"I appointed this Committee to recommend ways to enhance international cooperationamong competition enforcement authorities and to remove unwarranted barriers to internationaltrade in our global economy, and I look forward to reviewing its recommendations. I amenormously appreciative of the fine work of the Advisory Committee members and all who haveparticipated in this important endeavor."

Assistant Attorney General Klein:

"It is hard to overestimate the importance of international antitrust enforcement andcompetition policy in our global economy. Competition is the engine that drives economicsuccess, innovation, consumer benefit and the ability of businesses to succeed. This is just as trueglobally as domestically. This thoughtful and comprehensive report addresses the critical issuesin global antitrust enforcement, and provides many useful recommendations for moving forward."
