Find a Case on a Given Law

How to locate judicial opinions interpreting a specific statute.

Sometimes you might want to find out if there have been any court cases related to a specific law. Perhaps the court ruled on how a statute should be applied, or whether a particular law is unconstitutional and therefore invalid.

Annotated Codes

A code is a collection of current federal or state laws arranged by subject. Annotated codes have information provided in addition to the text of the law. Among these annotations are citations to cases that have arisen where the courts have interpreted the meaning of the laws and how they are to be applied. Pocket parts are inserted in the back of bound volumes to list the most recent cases and any recent updates in the law.

U.S. Code Annotated (U.S.C.A.)
KF62 .U5

This is the annotated version of the U.S. federal statutes as published by West. Two annotations are helpful in identifying cases:

Library References

Notes of Decisions
lists relevant cases after each statute and indicates what legal issue each decision addresses.

The U.S.C.A. can be searched online through West's Campus Research database, available to members of the UNT community:

  1. From the Libraries home page, select Electronic Resources/C/Campus Research
  2. Click on the Law tab to access the legal area of the database, then check United States Code Annotated under Statutes and Regulations.
  3. Enter a search in the boxes at the top of the page and click the blue "Search" button, or click on the "Table of Contents" link to search or browse by specific titles, chapters, or sections of the Code.

United States Code Service (U.S.C.S.)

The search interface to the U.S. Code, available to members of the UNT community through LexisNexis Academic, contains the full text of the United States Code Service (U.S.C.S.),

  1. From the Libraries home page, select Electronic Resources/L/LexisNexis Academic
  2. Select US Legal/Federal Statutes, Codes & Regulations
  3. Enter search terms in the search box. You can search the entire USCS simultaneously, or select "Browse" to limit your search to one title of the Code.
  4. Click on the red "Search" button.

Internet Sources

Because the annotations in unofficial sources are copyrighted materials provided at great expense to the publisher, annotated codes are not available on the Internet except through fee-based subscription services such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
